The Varieties of Roofing Materials

Roofing refers to the application of a thin membrane, whether applied to a single wall or to an entire building as a whole. The roof membrane is typically made from asphalt shingles, slate, gypsum, or wood. A roof membrane protects the roof from moisture, weathering, as well as blowing away by insects. The roof covers the structural framework of the structure. The term roof can also refer to the roofing structure, such as tiles, slates, or fascia that can be installed by a Roofing Cheltenham such as Storm Roofing.

Flat roofs are roofing materials that rest directly on the building’s frame and provide little support. A flat roof may be either a horizontal or vertical pitch. The flat roofing materials are designed to be lightweight, so that they are easily assembled. Flat roofs are usually part of the outer face of a building. Flats differ from pitched roofs in that they are not integral to the building’s frame.

Roofing systems are categorized according to their pitch. Low pitch roof systems are typically valleys and are used for buildings that are cold or to reduce the infiltration of heat during the cooler months. Asphalt and clay tile roofs are high pitch roof systems and are used primarily for hot climates. Though both pitch types are fairly waterproof, clay tiles are said to be better for coastal areas because of its ability to better resist heat, which is why these roofs are often used in the South. Vinyl shakes are a combination of clay tile and asphalt shingles, providing a medium roof system. These roofing materials are the best when it comes to resisting heat and providing insulation.
