- Dirt Buildup
Over time, dirt and debris may accumulate on the top of the doors or inside the frames. This buildup can cause the door to become stuck.
Clean the area around your door, including the frame and hinges. This will prevent buildup and ensure that it can swing freely. You can also remove the hinges of the door and clean it with an all-purpose cleaning solution if you are feeling particularly motivated. It can also solve door squeaking.
Do you know the metal piece attached to your door jambs? The strike plate is the name of this metal thing. When the door closes, it catches the latch in the hole. If your strike plate sticks out of the doorjamb or everything is not lined up exactly, it can cause your door to get stuck.
There are several things you can try if the problem isn’t that the strike plate is sticking out or the latch isn’t aligned with the hole due to the shift over time.
- Remove the strike plate from the door latch and realign the strike plate with it
- Electric drill to create a new hole in the latch
- Humidity
Humidity or heavy precipitation can cause wood to expand. Exterior doors are especially vulnerable to the weather. When it becomes humid, the doors will stick.
If you suspect that your door is expanding, remove it from its hinges, sand all the edges and leave more space for the door to fit into the frame. You don’t want to leave large gaps if you sand off too much.
